Establishing when and where your story takes place is one of the first steps in helping your reader settle into your story. It's more than the background of your story—it's the key to making your book feel real. This course will give you the tools to build your setting in a way that serves your story and your characters, and lives on in your readers' heads long after they finish reading.
Included in this course:
pre-recorded lessons
examples of immersive settings
setting-building worksheets
exercises to develop mood and characterization
These lessons are built on academic standards for students in grades 6-8, and include materials to support students who are learning these skills at an introductory level.
These lessons are built on academc standards for students in grades 9-12, and include materials which provide a more in-depth study of the featured topics, skills, and materials.
At the beginning of the course, you'll receive the pre-recorded lessons and class materials for the whole course. I suggest a pace of one lesson (with accompanying activities) a week, though you are welcome to complete them at any time during the 4 week term. At the end of each week, I will hold online "office hours" via Zoom, during which we can connect to discuss your progress as well as any questions you may have. When the term is over, you will lose access to the videos, but your learning materials (worksheets, downloads, etc.) are yours to keep.
